Pierre Barrieu, Head coach Pierre Barrieu is the founder of www.soccerconditioning.net and also the Head Fitness coach of the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer. He consults with US soccer after being the US Men National team and US Olympic team Head Strength and Conditioning coach for the last 4 years. While at UVA, Barrieu was in charge of the men soccer as well as men and women tennis programs. His first assignment with the US Soccer Federation was working with the Under-18 Men's National Team. Barrieu was then named the US Men's National Team strength and conditioning coach for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002, a tournament that the US eventually won! Barrieu was the conditioning coach for the 2002 World Cup Team in Japan/South Korea during the historic USA run to the QUARTER FINALS! During his tenure with US Soccer, The USA National Team participed to another World CUp (2006 in Germany), the Confederations Cup and won another Gold Cup title in 2005. Before he left UVA, he was assisting the strength and conditioning Head Coach Tony Decker with the UVa football team. Barrieu joined the Virginia coaching staff with an experienced background in strength and conditioning. He was named a USA Weightlifting (USAW) Certified Club Coach in 2001 and earned his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in 2000. Prior to working for UVA, Barrieu was an Exercise Physiology and Sport teacher in France while playing professional team handball. His passion for high-level conditioning started before his appointment to the University of Virginia and then the US Soccer Federation. Back in 1995, Barrieu received his fifth-year diploma in Education from the University of Nancy's Master's Institute in France. There, he researched the nature and effects of the psychological factors on training processes and performances of long distance runners. In 1994, Barrieu received his Teaching Certificate in Physical Education from the Ministry of Education in the Department of Teaching and Research in Sport and Physical Activities Sciences. He ranked in the 90th percentile on the national competitive examination and received his fourth-year university diploma level in Education and Kinesiology. In 2001, Barrieu helped guide the UVa men's soccer team to a record of 17-2-1, 6-0-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. His strength and conditioning regimen helped propel Virginia into becoming the first team in ACC history to win a regular season championship after winning all of its games by shutout. The Cavaliers spent the entire season ranked in the Top 25 of several national polls and three players (Kyle Martino, Marshall Leonard and Steve Totten) were drafted in the 2002 Major League Soccer Super Draft under Barrieu's guidance.
He spent time in September 2000 and December 2001 administering strength and conditioning training sessions for the F.C. METZ team - a First League soccer program in France. Coach Barrieu worked on a strength and conditioning symposium with the French National Team (winner of the World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000) at the National Training Center in Clairefontaine (France). In January of 1998 to September of 1999, he was also the strength and conditioning coach for two tennis players on the ATP Tour. From 1999-2000, he recorded 500 clinical hours in athletic training at Saint Anne's Belfield High School in Charlottesville, VA, helping to build the strength and conditioning program. His first assignment with USSF was working with the Under-18 Men's National Team. Barrieu was the conditioning coach for the 2002 World Cup Team (Japan/South Korea), before being appointed in his current position in January 2003. Coach Barrieu has traveled all over Europe to learn, observe and work with professional teams and soccer Federations in France (FC Metz, AS Nancy Lorraine, Paris Saint Germain, Girondins de Bordeaux), Spain (Real Sociedad), Netherlands (PSV Eindhoven), England (Arsenal FC, Fulham FC), Belgium (Standard de Liege), Germany (Munich 1860), Luxemburg and Italy (Lazio Rome, AC Milan).
